Architecture: Jira Field Discovery and Schema Validation Implementation
Date: 2025-12-04
Solution
Implemented comprehensive Dynamic Field Discovery with:
- Automatic schema introspection
- Field name-to-ID resolution
- Type-aware value normalization
- ADF auto-conversion
- Helpful error messages with suggestions
Architecture
1. Field Discovery (mcp_jira/utils/field_discovery.py)
from mcp_jira.utils import get_field_discovery
field_discovery = get_field_discovery() # Singleton instance
# Discover Epic Link field ID
epic_link_id = await field_discovery.get_epic_link_field_id()
# Returns: "customfield_10014" (varies by Jira instance)
# Find field by name
field = await field_discovery.get_field_by_name("Story Points")
# Returns: {"id": "customfield_10016", "name": "Story Points", "schema": {...}}
# Normalize field name to ID
field_id = await field_discovery.normalize_field_name_to_id("Epic Link")
# Returns: "customfield_10014"
# Get field schema
schema = await field_discovery.get_field_schema("customfield_10014")
# Returns: {"type": "string", "custom": "com.pyxis.greenhopper.jira:gh-epic-link"}
# Suggest similar fields (when field not found)
suggestions = await field_discovery.suggest_similar_fields("Epic")
# Returns: ["Epic Link (ID: customfield_10014)", "Epic Name (ID: customfield_10011)"]
Features:
- Caches field metadata for 1 hour (TTL)
- Queries
/rest/api/3/fieldon first access - Maps custom field schema types to field IDs
- Provides field validation and normalization
2. ADF Converter (mcp_jira/utils/adf.py)
from mcp_jira.utils import text_to_adf, adf_to_text, ensure_adf_format
# Convert plain text to ADF
adf = text_to_adf("Hello\nWorld")
# Returns: {
# "version": 1,
# "type": "doc",
# "content": [
# {"type": "paragraph", "content": [{"type": "text", "text": "Hello"}]},
# {"type": "paragraph", "content": [{"type": "text", "text": "World"}]}
# ]
# }
# Convert ADF back to text
text = adf_to_text(adf)
# Returns: "Hello\nWorld"
# Smart conversion (auto-detects format)
result = ensure_adf_format("Plain text") # Converts to ADF
result = ensure_adf_format(adf) # Returns as-is
Features:
- Converts plain text → ADF (paragraphs, lists, headings, code blocks)
- Converts ADF → plain text (preserves formatting with markdown)
- Auto-detection of existing ADF format
- Handles empty/null values gracefully
3. Field Type Handlers (mcp_jira/utils/field_handlers.py)
from mcp_jira.utils.field_handlers import normalize_field_value
# Normalize a date field
value, error = await normalize_field_value("duedate", "2025-12-31", field_schema)
# Returns: ("2025-12-31", None)
# Normalize a user field
value, error = await normalize_field_value("assignee", "account-id-123", field_schema)
# Returns: ({"accountId": "account-id-123"}, None)
# Normalize an array field (components)
value, error = await normalize_field_value("components", ["Frontend", "Backend"], field_schema)
# Returns: ([{"name": "Frontend"}, {"name": "Backend"}], None)
Supported Types:
string: Text fieldsnumber: Integer/float fields (Story Points, etc.)date: Date fields (YYYY-MM-DD)datetime: DateTime fields (ISO 8601)user: User fields (converts to{"accountId": "..."})array: Multi-value fields (labels, components, versions)option: Select/radio fieldspriority: Priority fieldsissuetype: Issue type fieldsproject: Project fieldsversion: Version fieldscomponent: Component fields- Rich text (ADF): Auto-conversion from plain text
New MCP Tools
get_field_info
Get detailed information about a specific field.
get_field_info(field_name="Epic Link")
# Returns: {
# "id": "customfield_10014",
# "name": "Epic Link",
# "custom": true,
# "schema": {"type": "string", "custom": "com.pyxis.greenhopper.jira:gh-epic-link"},
# "navigable": true,
# "searchable": true,
# "orderable": true
# }
list_custom_fields
List all custom fields in the Jira instance.
list_custom_fields()
# Returns: [
# {"id": "customfield_10014", "name": "Epic Link", ...},
# {"id": "customfield_10016", "name": "Story Points", ...},
# ...
# ]
get_epic_link_field
Get the Epic Link field ID for this Jira instance.
get_epic_link_field()
# Returns: {"field_id": "customfield_10014", "name": "Epic Link"}
refresh_field_cache
Force refresh the field metadata cache.
refresh_field_cache()
# Returns: {"message": "Field cache refreshed", "field_count": 147}
Error Messages - Before vs After
Before (Cryptic)
{
"error": "API request failed: 400",
"errors": {
"customfield_10014": "Epic Link is invalid"
}
}
After (Helpful)
{
"error": "API request failed: 400",
"field_errors": [
"Field 'Epic Link' error: Epic Link is invalid. Did you mean: Epic Link (ID: customfield_10014), Epic Name (ID: customfield_10011), Epic Status (ID: customfield_10015)?"
]
}
Performance
Caching Strategy
- Field metadata: Cached for 1 hour (TTL)
- First request: ~200ms (fetches from
/rest/api/3/field) - Subsequent requests: <1ms (cache hit)
- Cache invalidation: Automatic after 1 hour or manual via
refresh_field_cache()
Memory Usage
- Typical field cache: ~50KB for 150 fields
- Singleton pattern: One instance per MCP server process
Migration Guide
For Existing Code
Option 1: Keep using field IDs (backwards compatible)
await create_issue(
project_key="PROJ",
summary="Task",
additional_fields={
"customfield_10014": "PROJ-123" # Still works!
}
)
Option 2: Switch to field names (recommended)
await create_issue(
project_key="PROJ",
summary="Task",
additional_fields={
"Epic Link": "PROJ-123" # More readable!
}
)
For LLM Prompts
Update agent prompts to use field names:
# Before
"When creating Jira issues, use customfield_10014 for Epic Link"
# After
"When creating Jira issues, use field names like 'Epic Link', 'Story Points', etc."
Known Limitations
- Create Metadata: Field required validation requires querying
/rest/api/3/issue/createmeta(expensive operation, not always cached) - Markdown Parsing: ADF converter doesn't parse all markdown formatting (only basic paragraphs, lists, headings)
- Field Permissions: Some fields may be visible but not editable based on user permissions
- Project-Specific Fields: Some custom fields are project-specific and may not appear in global field list
Future Enhancements
- Create Metadata Caching: Cache required field information per project/issue type
- Advanced ADF Parsing: Support full markdown → ADF conversion (bold, italic, links, code, tables)
- Field Validation: Pre-validate field values before API call
- Bulk Field Discovery: Optimize bulk operations with batched field lookups
- Field Templates: Pre-defined templates for common field combinations
Rollback Plan
If issues arise:
-
Revert to previous version:
git revert <commit-hash>
docker compose restart mcp-jira -
Disable field discovery (emergency):
- Set
MCP_JIRA_USE_FIELD_DISCOVERY=falsein environment - Falls back to legacy behavior
- Set
-
Clear field cache:
- Call
refresh_field_cache()MCP tool - Restart MCP server
- Call
Conclusion
This implementation provides a robust, maintainable foundation for Jira field management across different instances. It significantly improves the developer experience while maintaining backwards compatibility.
